ACCOUNTANT (GA) (HQ-Westminster, CO)

Tri-State is a Denver based progressive and rapidly growing non-profit consumer owned wholesale supplier of electric power to forty-four distribution cooperatives in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and New Mexico. With over 1100 employees, Tri-State operates and maintains fossil fuel power plants with owned coal-fired capacity of 1826 megawatts, gas turbines with 526 megawatts of capacity, and over 5000 miles of high voltage transmission lines.

Responsibilities include verifying appropriateness and accuracy of all recorded transactions and compliance with requirements imposed by contracts, policy and GAAP. Work includes providing technical assistance to corporate personnel and recommending/implementing improvements for accounting efficiency.

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting.

  • Five (5) years of progressive accounting experience, and extensive knowledge of GAAP.

  • Experience in FERC and/or RUS accounting preferred. Working knowledge of PCs, computerized accounting systems, spreadsheet and word processing software necessary. ORACLE experience desired.

Responsible for providing technical direction, establishing and maintaining property accounting records and providing plant accounting information to the internal tax area, accounting and appropriate external areas such as regulatory and agency requirements.

ASSOCIATE TERM MARKETER OR TERM MARKETER (HQ  Westminster, CO)

Under the general supervision of the Energy Portfolio Manager, the Term Marketer is responsible for: day-ahead, weekly, balance-of-month, monthly and quarterly transaction negotiation and execution of commodities supporting asset maximization and hedging strategies of Tri-State resources; monitoring commodity purchases and sales, ensuring that adequate resources are available to meet all Tri-State load obligations; and working together with Energy Markets staff to optimize Tri-State resources.

  • BA/BS degree in Economics, Finance, Business, or related field or combination of education and experience.

  • Term Marketer: minimum of eight (8) years of experience with an electric utility company, energy trading company, or related industry. Previous commodity trading and/or energy industry operations experience preferred. Strong commercial trading, orientation and knowledge preferred.

  • Associate Term Marketer: minimum of five (5) years of experience with an electric utility company, energy trading company, or related industry. Previous commodity trading and/or energy industry operations experience preferred. Strong commercial trading, orientation and knowledge preferred.

  • Monitors and manages electricity transactions within approved authority matrices of Tri-State's Energy Risk Management Policy.

  • Review and update, as appropriate, load forecasts prior to executing day-ahead electricity products.

  • Monitor OASIS to assure transmission availability supports electricity transactions and pre-scheduled load/resource balancing processes with Tri-State's system.

  • Establish Tri-State's pre-scheduled market position within approved authority matrices of Tri-State's Energy Risk Management Policy and other operating guidelines.

This position is responsible for the award and administration of purchase orders and contracts for materials, services, repairs and equipment to support maintenance, repair and operations of existing utility structure. Procurement processes are performed in accordance with Company policy and procedure and any other applicable laws.

Responsible for providing support for the corporate chemistry program and individual plant chemistry programs.

COMBUSTION TURBINE TECHNICIAN I - JL (Generation East-Knutson Station, Brighton, CO)

Responsible for the safe and efficient operations and maintenance of plant activities at the combustion turbine power plant.

(The following duties are for a JL Combustion Turbine Technician. Duties for Technician I-IV are similar but less in overall scope, responsibility, and accountability.)

  • Requires at least one (1) year of experience as a Combustion Turbine Technician IV.

  • Six (6) years of power plant experience which may consist of an equivalent combination of related education and/or power plant experience.

  • Must have strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and repair skills.

  • Willingness to work at other Power Plants as required.

  • Possession of current valid driver's license.

  • Maintain CPR certification, spill/waste handling training requirements and the ability to perform CPR and apply spill/waste training, respirator training and testing, and obtain opacity certification twice per year.

  • Willingness to work extra or irregular hours, shift work, weekends, holidays, call out and overnight travel as required.

  • Willingness to work with high voltages, obtain switching certification, and perform high voltage switching.

ENERGY RESOURCE COORDINATOR OR ASSOCIATE (HQ - Westminster, CO)

The Energy Resource Coordinator (ERC) position is a merchant function and is responsible for real time scheduling and dispatch of Tri-State-owned and contracted generation resources fueled by coal, natural gas, fuel oil, hydro, and in the near future, renewable sources. Additional responsibilities include coordination with a Real Time Marketer to optimize resources versus energy markets in order to economically balance member loads and serve long-term power supply agreements.

    Responsibilities:
  • Perform hourly load forecasting, scheduling and balancing as well as intra-hour load and resource balancing of the Tri-State system in coordination with the Balancing Authorities.
  • Hourly coordination required with unit and contractual participants about generation and contract energy schedules.
  • Work with Real Time Marketer to optimize all available generation and transmission assets to the fullest extent possible.
  • During emergency conditions, coordinate with Tri-State Reliability Dispatchers, Balancing Authorities, and Transmission Operators to restore load and generation balance.
  • Maintain spinning and operating reserves at all times. Respond to Reserve Group contingencies.

The position will actively represent Tri-State in various external committees, work groups, and other meetings with utility organizations and the RRO and ERO. This position will be heavily involved in Compliance for System Operations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and related industry experience resulting in demonstrated ability to perform major duties.

  • Experience in delivering training presentations, using a systematic approach, in a System Operations environment desired.

  • Ten years of experience with interconnected electrical system operations, with at least five years in a primary position of responsibility and leadership training environment, or equivalent combination and related industry experience.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the systematic approach to training (A.D.D.I.E.)

PLANT OPERATOR 1 - 11 (Generation South, Escalante Station, Prewitt, NM)

Responsibility may vary depending on level of position. Function may include: Unloading the train, operating machinery and systems associated with the coal hoisting systems, auxiliary plant equipment, and the scrubber and bag house, operating machinery and equipment associated with the boiler/turbine operation, the water treatment plant, the cardboard recycling plant steam and supply equipment.

  • Must have and maintain a current, valid driver's license.

  • Must pass TABE Math and Reading test and SRA Mechanical Concepts test.

  • Must have work experience wherein basic familiarization of fans, pumps, motors, and other moving and rotating equipment have been demonstrated.

  • Must work a rotating shift including weekends and holidays.

  • Must be able to perform heavy work requiring lifting or exerting pressure in excess of 50 pounds frequently. Must be able to work in confined spaces and in high places. A substantial amount of standing, walking, climbing reaching overhead, bending and squatting is required. Must be able to hear alarms and timers and differentiate between the different normal and abnormal noises, sounds and alarms found in the operation of a power plant. Vision requirements include the ability to differentiate between colors, see instrument read-outs, charts, gauges, and alarm windows. Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions, high heat, high voltage, dusts, chemicals, loud noises, rotating machinery and other conditions found in a coal fired power plant.

  • Must reside within a one hour reporting time to the Escalante Generating Station.

Scope

    TRANSMISSION SYSTEM OPERATOR (HQ- Westminster, CO)

    Responsible for performing routine and emergency switching on the transmission system. Monitoring transmission system parameters, such as voltages, line and transformer loads and taking corrective actions as required. This position is tasked with the authority and responsibility to operate the Tri-State transmission system in such a manner as to comply with all appropriate NERC Reliability Standards.

    This position is not a System Operator Trainee position. It is an entry-level position for a System Operator having a minimum of 4 years subtransmission/distribution experience. In this position the Transmission System Operator must work with a Senior System Operator on shift.

    • Completion of at least one (1) year as a Tri State System Operator Trainee Program or an equivalent level of experience on an interconnected electrical system.

    • Working knowledge of algebra, geometry, and basic principles of physics including electrical and mechanical theory, AC and DC currents, and the fundamentals of power flow.

    • Must be NERC Certified before assuming the duties of a Transmission System Operator and must maintain certification through completion of required continuing education hours.
